SPIRES

EVER NOTICE how everything seems to grow upwards, towards the sky? Even Magic Monkeys. What's with that? A lot of creativity seems to want to go that way, too. That's what my Spires are about, the subtle sense that the same force that draws everything skyward —like the flower up the stem—is what is pulling art out of me. To create these, I begin by building a Gaudi-esque sculpture, painting it various colors. Then I photograph the sculpture's spires with very little light and exposure, creating dim, semi-abstract, Clifford Still-like, upward-drippy images of forms (or formations) that appear to be, at once, natural and supernatural.
