SPIRES

EVER NOTICE how everything seems to grow up, towards the sky? Even Magic Monkeys. What's with that? A lot of creativity seems to want to go that way, too. That's what my Spires series is about, the subtle sense that the same force that draws everything skyward is what is pulling art out of me. To create these, I begin by building a Gaudi-esque sculpture, painting it various colors. Then I photograph the sculpture's spires with very little light and exposure, creating dim, semi-abstract, Clifford Still-like, drippy images that you have to study carefully, practically squinting to see what's actually there.
